White Night 2017

White Night 2017

Melbourne is ready to light up the skies for 24 hours straight with White Night 2017 on Saturday 18 February, starting at 7pm and running throughout the night until  7am on Sunday.

Each year, the event draws crowds into the streets, laneways and gardens of the CBD and surrounding areas to experience installations, lighting, exhibitions, street performances, film, music, dance and interactive events.

This year there is four key areas in the city which make up White Night 2017:

  1. ‘Flames and fantasy’ to the north in the Carlton Gardens
  2. ‘Precipitation & Enlightenment’ in the centre of the CBD
  3. ‘Swing Central’ from Collins Street through Fed Square and down to Birrarung Marr

White Night Survival Guide:
It is a big night, here are some tips to making it all the way through.

  1. The largest crowds are generally from 7pm to 12am and lighten up after midnight. Consider arriving later or booking in dinner first.
  1. If you are planning to take the train consider getting off at Melbourne Central and commencing your journey at the north end which includes stunning works at the Royal Exhibition Building, Melbourne Museum plaza and the Carlton Gardens.
  1. The projections will take full effect from around 9:00pm, and run all night through to 7:00am.
  1. Public transport will run all night (trams, trains and buses) and all city loop stations are open. Other options are bike valet parking and special deals with participating car parks.
  1. This year, the White Night Melbourne northern and southern precincts have expanded considerably. Consider commencing your journey in either the Carlton Gardens or Alexandra Gardens and the Queen Victoria Gardens before coming into the city.
  1. Extra road closures this year mean that while Swanston Street and Flinders Street may be particularly busy between 7pm and 11pm, Russell and Elizabeth Streets are expected to have lighter pedestrian foot traffic.
  1. This year there is a great online map that can assist with planning your journey.
