From the 16th to the 29th of January Melbourne will welcome tennis’ greats and rising stars to the city for the Australian Open.

The opening Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open was founded in 1905 and we are proud to welcome the tournament back to Melbourne for another thrilling year.

Since its inception the Australian Open has played host to many iconic moments in the history of grand slam tennis. The contest between Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi in the 2000 men’s semi-final was a match-up of epic proportions that is still remembered vividly 17 years on. A match where Sampras fired 37 aces, but still wound up the loser. Stretching out over 5 sets the two champions wrestled backwards and forwards for control of the match and had the crowd in an uproar. Eventually Agassi broke Sampras’ serve and finished off a 6-4, 3-6, 6-7 (0-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory.

In 2017 the Australian Open schedule involves four rounds of competition before the semi, quarter and final rounds pitch the best players against each in thrilling, edge-of-your-seat displays of athleticism.

Expect to see top seeded players such as Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Angelique Kerber, Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal throughout the tournament. Plus, Australians Sam Stosur, Dasha Gavrilova, Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic will be flying the home flag on the hard courts to packed out crowds throughout Melbourne Park and the main courts at Margaret Court, Hisense and Rod Laver Arena. Find out more information about Australian Open tickets here.

As always there is as much to see off the court as on the court. AO Open Sessions run each night from the 14th to the 22nd of January and feature live music from the likes of Missy Higgins, Birds of Tokyo and The Temper Trap. The AO Festival returns for another year with dining and entertainment spread over three terraces, from food trucks to massages this is definitely a destination to check out between games.

Spending the day or days at the tennis can be tiring, especially during the Melbourne summer. Insider tip, make sure to take plenty of water and sunscreen and reapply regularly to avoid coming home bright pink.
